How to find the date and time of a funeral

When almost every town in Britain had its own newspaper, it was easy to find out when and where someone’s funeral would be held via the Births, Deaths and Marriages section.

Most local newspapers still publish funeral notices. However, over the last couple of decades more than 250 local news publications have closed down in the UK. Many publications now have online directories for funeral notices.

Social media

No matter where we live in the world, social media, has allowed people to easily keep in touch with old friends and acquaintances. People can communicate instantly with friends, and with groups. These days, most people have a smartphone (according to research from Uswitch), even among older age groups (86% of those aged 55 to 64, 80% aged 65 and above).

Posting a funeral announcement on social media is a convenient way for a bereaved family to reach the right people, removing the need to talk to everyone individually at a very difficult time. Acquaintances who the family is not in direct contact with may also find out about funeral details from mutual friends sharing social media posts.

With something as important as the date and time of a funeral, it’s important to make sure you have the correct information. If you’re sharing a funeral notice on social media, make sure it’s an official one. If you’re unsure, check with family members or close friends to make sure that all the details mentioned are correct.

Online funeral notices

If you know that someone has died but have no connection with them or their family on social media, you can still search for the date and time of their funeral online. Many funeral directors post the details of the funerals they’re officiating on their own websites. Online funeral notices have the advantage that they can be updated quickly, and some provide updates via email.
